Who is covered
Employees whose gross wage is ₹21,000 a month or less (₹25,000 for employees with a disability).

The rates
The employee pays 0.75% of gross and the employer 3.25%, both rounded up to the next rupee.

Contribution periods
Coverage is decided at the start of each six-month period — April to September and October to March. Someone covered at the start stays covered for the whole period, even after a raise.
Common questions
Is ESI on basic or gross?
On gross wages — basic plus allowances. Unlike PF, there is no separate ceiling on the wage used.
What if someone earns less than ₹176 a day?
Employees earning an average of ₹176 a day or less don’t pay their share; the employer still pays 3.25%.

Establishments with 10 or more employees in areas where the ESI scheme applies.
