How it’s worked out
- 01
The wage
PF is charged on basic pay plus dearness allowance. By default contributions are worked out on wages up to ₹15,000, so the most either side pays is ₹1,800 a month.
- 02
The employee’s share
12% of the PF wage, deducted from salary.
- 03
The employer’s share
Also 12%, but split: 8.33% of wages (on at most ₹15,000, so at most ₹1,250) goes to the pension scheme (EPS), and the rest goes to the employee’s PF account.
- 04
On top
The employer also pays a 0.5% admin charge (minimum ₹500 a month per company) and 0.5% for EDLI life insurance, on wages up to ₹15,000.
Common questions
Can PF be paid on the full salary?
Yes, if the employer and employee agree to contribute on wages above ₹15,000. The pension share stays capped at ₹1,250 either way; the rest goes to PF.
Who has to be enrolled?
Companies with 20 or more employees must register. Employees earning up to ₹15,000 basic must be enrolled; above that it is optional for new joiners who were never PF members.
Why is employer EPF less than the employee’s share?
Because part of the employer’s 12% goes to the pension scheme. The two parts always add back to exactly 12%.
