How it’s worked out
- 01
Set by each state
Professional tax is a state tax, so the slabs differ from state to state. Several states — Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Rajasthan among them — don’t charge it at all.
- 02
Deducted by the employer
The employer deducts it from salary each month and pays it to the state. No state can charge more than ₹2,500 a year per person.
Common questions
Why is February different in some states?
To reach the ₹2,500 yearly total, Maharashtra and Karnataka charge ₹300 in February instead of ₹200.
Are these slabs current?
They were checked in September 2026. States do revise them, so check your state’s latest notification before filing.
